SAN JOSE CITYSCAPE

San Jose Cityscape - Linear Painting by Prakash N Chandras

San Jose Cityscape

Once when I was back in Pune, India, I mentioned to a friend that Pune and San Jose are sister cities. My friend asked me, “What does San Jose look like?” I tried to describe it to him, but I was not satisfied with my own description. Then, I came across a picture of San Jose, an aerial view, which, was a perfect visual description of San Jose for my friend in Pune. I decided to paint that view with bright Californian colors, a lot brighter than any photograph could ever capture.  You can see the city landmarks such as the purple Children’s Museum, Montgomery Theater and the curved Performing Arts Center, Adobe and Earthnet Headquarters, Fairmont and Hilton Hotels and even a peek-a-boo view of the famed St. Joseph’s Cathedral. Also the main city streets and the light rail are visible. Several times I have used this painting to give directions to friends. Also, I found out that the city has the same view photographed every year to keep track of the changes in city appearance. In fact, there have been several new buildings that have appeared as a result of the Clinton era tail-end developments. Lately though, the San Jose Symphony has disappeared and the new buildings sit empty, I don’t think the city skyline will change that fast, at least for a while.
