THE RED FORT – NEW DELHI

The Red Fort – New Delhi

A postcard of the Red Fort inspired this painting. This is the part of the Red Fort where the Prime Minister hoists the Indian national flag and there is a big military parade every Independence Day. I have visited the Red Fort a few times and I am well aware of the history of it. At one point in the 16th century the Hindu King Shivaji, The Great, had established his kingdom all the way up to the doors of the Red Fort. Every Tuesday there was MEENA BAZAAR held inside of the Fort. On that day the market was operated and controlled only by the women and for the women! In fact all the males had to leave the Fort every Tuesday. Homesickness, patriotism and most importantly, the memories of the bright colors of India inspired this painting.

One Indian friend of mine was so filled with patriotism after seeing this painting that he wanted me to present the painting to our Prime Minister of that time, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. I was flattered.
